Right Posture Tips for Working from Home
Covid-19 is something more than a disease. The life-threatening microorganism, Corona is not just affecting our health but also our social, economic and professional life also. According to many social scientists, either this century or the past one has never come across such a horrendous situation. The most wretched situation is that we do not have foolproof technology or an effective medicine to ward off this evil. In such a circumstance, the only effective method to prevent the spreading of the disease is to keep social distance which has confined us to our homes for a longer period.
As a part of the social distancing measures, many companies are asking the employees to work from home. Although it may be a blessing in disguise for many, it can affect your health also adversely. When you start working from home, you are losing many good things in the profession. You are not able to mingle with your colleagues and friends freely. This will certainly leave a negative impact on your mental condition. The second thing you lose is the regular exercise you used to do as a part of your profession. You used to stand, walk, and used to climb the staircase as a part of your job. Doing all these, you are providing physical exercise to your body. Now, all these have stopped to a great extent.
When you suddenly stop your regular exercises, it certainly will affect your body by making it vulnerable to many diseases and health conditions. Hence, you should take a lot of care while working from home. The most important thing you should take care of is your postures while working from home.
Here are some tips to optimize your posture and thus to make working from home more comfortable and healthier.
Avoid using your couch
When you work from home, you need not follow the official protocols. Hence, you may get tempted to enjoy the warmth of your bed while working. This will certainly provide you a bit of comfort for the short term but it will be harmful to your body in the long run. Nature has designed each posture for a certain function and the lying posture is to take rest. Working in this posture for a longer period is not at all good. It will affect your neck as you have to keep the neck lifted to see the laptop. Hence, avoid working from your bed; instead, sit at a table or a desk.
Use a comfortable chair and Table
While you select a table and chair for working from home, make sure that there is enough knee/foot space so that you can even stand up at regular intervals which will give you much relief from sitting in the same posture for a longer period. While sitting, you should ensure that the lower parts of your back are properly supported. Your shoulders should be relaxed, or in other words, it should neither be slumped nor elevated.
Working in a standing position
When you are working from home, it is quite natural to help with the daily chores too. When you are in the kitchen, you can work in a standing position using the kitchen shelves as the computer table However, you should remember to stand straight while working without leaning towards some surfaces. If you lean to some surfaces for a long time, it will affect your backbone as well as the hip joint.
Keep on Changing the Postures
Do not continue working for a longer time in the same posture. At regular intervals, you should change your posture. If you are working at a desk, you can change to the standing position after quite some time. If you do not have a possibility to work in a standing position, just stop work for a while and go for a few rounds in your drawing-room. If you have a staircase at your home, it will be even better to climb it once or twice at regular intervals.
Apart from the postures, you should always remember to keep your body hydrated. Secondly, you should keep the display screen of your laptop or desktop in a straight line with your eyes. In other words, you should look at it with your eyes without either lifting or bowing down your neck. You should use headphones if needed. Work from home can be made a pleasure if you take care of these few things.
